Catch a Show

As both a new Maconite and a newlywed, it has been a priority of my husband and I to ensure that we use our date nights to get to know our city. Macon is truly an amazing place with a lot of history, so as my partner and I seek to connect with one another, we want to ensure that we connect with Macon too. Macon has been through a lot of change and we have been beneficiaries of that change. We most recently moved from North Carolina, most recently the Winston-Salem area which is known to North Carolinians as the City of Arts and Innovation. Thus, we have always had a great appreciation for creativity, specifically the fine arts.

A few weeks ago, we received tickets to see a play entitled “Wounded but not Defeated” that was showing at Macon’s historic Douglass Theatre. It was produced by a Jackso Entertainment Group and was a faith-based production. We really enjoyed this production and its positive message, especially in the middle of a global pandemic and the implications of living through this unprecedented time in history. This was my first visit to the Douglass Theatre but I was aware of the historical significance of this landmark theatre. The Douglass Theatre was built in the 1920s and has hosted a variety of shows, productions, and famous musical acts (i.e., James Brown and Little Richard). How special that it still functions as a theatre to this day!

About two weeks later, we also visited Theatre Macon to attend an event apart of the Macon Film Festival. The festival features film (both narrative and documentary) in addition to workshops and social events. We decided to go to a workshop about music and film. The feature speaker was Steven Moretti who is the President and CEO of the Macon Pops. He is also a drummer who has worked as a part of film productions and thus was sharing his knowledge with the group. We learned so much on this date. I have a hard time watching television and films without thinking about what I learned in this workshop! We also walked over to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame as it was a festival venue. We plan to attend some of their upcoming productions this Fall!

Date night is very important to us. Like many others, Ricardo and I both work outside of our home and this it is so important for us to spend undivided time with one another connecting and cherishing our relationship. We have thoroughly enjoyed spending our dates and exploring our new city!
