The Goddess in Me

We have all been there. I was whining to Nancy about a certain someone who couldn’t seem to realize how good I would be for him, personally and professionally. She said, “It’s just like Lizzo says, he’s supposed to hold you down but he’s holding you back.” “Who?” “Oh my god, you haven’t heard of Lizzo yet?! Okay, just listen to this.” And just like that Truth Hurts became my anthem.

Lizzo is undeniably talented. And what’s more, she is creating music that is uplifting and relevant. Lizzo just gets it. She captures that feeling of being afraid to feel, the struggle of self-love when someone says you just aren’t what they’re looking for, the way rejection can propel you to boldness. Plenty of people can sing, but no one can make you feel understood the way Lizzo can.

From top to bottom, her album Cuz I Love You is solid gold. It opens with the title track and hits you right in the feels. “I thought I was love impaired,” she sings, practically reading my mail. Lizzo wastes no time getting straight to the point. She is a force to be reckoned with.

The next 13 songs take the listener on a journey that truly feels like modern womanhood distilled to into an hour and in musical form. Her tracks Like A Girl, Juice, and Soulmate celebrate the magic of female power and purpose. She makes you feel like you could run for president and win.

She throws the boys a bone with Jerome and Crybaby. They ooze with soul and perfectly capture the angst of modern relationships. Then Tempo switches up the mood and propels the next segment of the album into something to enjoy in company (if you know what I mean), from dance club to date night.

And then, of course, Truth Hurts swoops in for the rejected. She picks the listener up from a place of feeling powerless to the one taking control. Modernizing the sentiment of washing a man out of your hair, Lizzo owns the “emotional haircut” and takes it the next level by throwing in bomb lighting. On the surface, this song is about winning a break up. But then you start to realize it is about accepting the goddess inside you.

Yeah, I got boy problems, that’s the human in me. Bling, bling. Then I solve them, that’s the goddess in me.

The goddess inside knows you are no side chick and won’t let you accept such treatment. She knows you are worth flowers on Sunday. She knows you are sexy with or without makeup. She knows you are free. She knows you are your own soulmate.

Every track is amazing and will make you feel amazing. It’s perfect for the commute, the evening walk, getting ready for a night out, a party… it is perfect.
