Lowkey Insecure
Truth? I have never been one to watch series regularly. It’s not for lack of trying either! There are countless shows I have tried to watch but just can’t seem to catch the craze. Either the pilot doesn’t compel me (The Office) or the plot is over my head (WestWorld) or the shows drags over too many years (How I Met Your Mother) or NONE of the characters are relatable/likable (Girls, Tiger King, Always Sunny) or the violence against women weighs too heavily (Handmaid’s Tale) or any number of other reasons that turn me off. Clearly, I can be critical. Considering that time is one of our most valuable resources (not to mention what we consume can linger emotionally if not psychologically), if I am going to spend my time on a show I want it to be worth it. The market is saturated with shows that, for me, are not worth it.
Every so often, however, I come across a diamond in the ruff. A show that not only hooks me but inspires me. In 2017 that diamond was Insecure. The pilot was equal parts funny, relatable, vulnerable. Acting on point. Writing top notch. Wardrobe beautiful. And don’t get me started on the music and cinematography. Creator Issa Rae has managed to translate the honest, awkward balancing act that is demanded of Millennials navigating the uncharted waters of modern adulthood into entertaining, quality television.
Another great thing about Insecure is the artfulness with which it addresses themes of mental health, racism in the workplace, polyamorous relationships, postpartum depression, and profiling, to name a few. The show has a way of incorporating heavy topics in a meaningful way without seeming contrived or belaboring the point. Themes are woven seamlessly into the narrative of the characters’ lives, leaving viewers with the possibility of an expanded understanding.
Season one was great. Season two was fun. Season three was real. Season four was fantastic. Each season has gotten progressively stronger and they are each very much worth the time. It is refreshing to see such artful storytelling and inspiring to see it created by a woman my age. The latest season was nominated this week for 8 Primetime Emmy Awards, including best comedy series, all of which Insecure is worthy. So if you haven’t already, I highly recommend giving Insecure a watch; it is lowkey the best.
